Actor Anushka Sharma is all set to start the next schedule of Chakda Express in Kolkata. The movie is based on the life of popular female cricketer Jhulan Goswami. This is the first time Anushka’s fans would see her in a biographical film, and the excitement is evident. After her fun-filled London schedule, where she also donned the role of a fun ‘biscuit reviewer’, remember? Anushka has landed in Kolkata for another schedule, and guess how she decided to kickstart it. With food, of course!
Anushka has never shied away from flaunting her foodie side. She turned vegan a couple of years ago and often takes to Instagram to give us a sneak peek of her plate. In Kolkata, for breakfast, she chose to have some cut guavas and Jhalmuri. “Jhalmuri and Amrood for breakfast. Who wants to be in my diet plan?”, she wrote in the caption.
Jhalmuri, for the uninitiated, is a classic Bengali streetside snack. It is also very popular in neighbouring states such as Bihar and Odisha. It is a dry snack made with puffed rice, chopped onions, sev, and lots of green chillies. While the green chillies make the snack spicy, it is the addition of mustard oil that makes it extra pungent and zingy. It may seem ‘a bit too much’ at first, but once you start munching, there is no looking back. You just have to finish the whole lot in your paper cone. That’s right, most street vendors in Kolkata, use a leaf of paper that they wrap like a cone to serve freshly rustled Jhalmuri. Cost-friendly and environment-friendly too.
Jhalmuri also has a western cousin in Bhelpuri. Bhelpuri is another snack with puffed rice in lead, but the condiments differ slightly. Bhel is sweet, tangy and spicy, owing to the chutneys, and the vegetables used. Here’s how you can make both Jhalmuri and Bhel at home. Try these recipes soon and let us know how you liked it.
