Growing squash from seeds is simple. With the right steps, anyone can cultivate this productive plant at home.

Choosing The Right Squash Variety

Squashes are classified into two types: summer and winter squashes. Summer squash, such as zucchini, has a thinner skin and is best used immediately. Winter squashes like butternut have tougher skins, allowing for storage over several months. When choosing a variety, consider your available space. Bush varieties are compact and suitable for containers, while trailing squashes need more ground or support structures.

Preparing The Soil

Squash thrives in nutrient-rich, moisture-retentive soil. It requires full sun and well-drained soil. To prepare, create mounds by digging 30 cm-wide holes and filling them with compost or well-rotted manure. Spacing is crucial for healthy growth; leave at least 90 cm for bush varieties and 1.5 m for trailing types. This ensures adequate airflow and prevents fungal diseases.

Sowing Squash Seeds

Squash seeds can be sown directly outdoors after the last frost or started indoors for an earlier harvest. For outdoor sowing, plant seeds in late May or early June, 2.5 cm-deep, in mounds spaced as mentioned above. Sow two or three seeds per mound. If multiple seedlings appear, thin out the weaker ones to allow the strongest to thrive.

For regions with a shorter growing season, indoor seed sowing is ideal. In mid-April, plant one seed per 7.5 cm pot, placing the seed on its side, 13 mm deep, in multi-purpose compost. Keep them warm (18–21°C) on a windowsill or in a heated propagator. Once seedlings appear, water regularly and plant them outdoors after the last frost, hardening them off gradually.

Planting Out

After the last frost, plant your squash seedlings outdoors in the prepared ground. Ensure that the root ball remains undisturbed while planting. Water the plants well and protect them from pests such as slugs. Space them as previously mentioned for optimal growth. Summer squash can also be grown in containers, requiring a pot at least 45 cm wide.

Watering And Mulching

Squash plants need consistent moisture, especially during fruiting. Water at the base of the plant, avoiding the leaves to prevent fungal infections. To help retain moisture, apply a thick layer of mulch around the plants, leaving some space around the stem to avoid rot.

Fertilising

Squash is a heavy feeder. Before planting, mix compost or a 5-10-10 fertiliser into the soil. During the growing season, apply fertiliser monthly. When the first fruits appear, use a high-potassium liquid fertiliser to promote further growth.

Pruning And Training

Trailing squash plants can spread widely. If space is limited, train the vines around short canes or up sturdy supports. Alternatively, prune excess vines to manage the plant’s spread. This can help keep your garden organised and encourage healthier growth

Harvesting Squash

Summer squashes are ready for harvest when small, tender, and about 6–8 inches long. For winter squashes, the rind should resist puncture by a fingernail, indicating maturity. Use scissors or pruning shears to cut the squash from the vine to prevent damage to the plant.

Storing Winter Squash

Winter squash can be stored for months if harvested and cured properly. After picking, lay the squashes in the sun or a greenhouse for a week to harden their skins. Store them in a well-ventilated area at around 10–15°C, checking regularly for any signs of rot.

Growing squash at home is both rewarding and practical. With a little preparation, gardeners can enjoy fresh produce throughout the year. Whether grown in large gardens or small containers, squash plants are easy to manage and yield plenty of fruits, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable kitchen.
