Celery grows well in containers because of its shallow root system. Following a few easy steps, anyone can successfully cultivate celery in a container, making it accessible for those with small outdoor spaces like balconies or terraces.

Selecting The Right Container

Choose a container at least 8 inches (20 cm) deep. A deeper container allows the roots to spread well, ensuring proper growth. Ensure the container has good drainage, as celery needs moist soil that is not waterlogged. A plastic container works best because it retains moisture better than unglazed clay pots.

Preparing The Soil

Celery thrives in slightly alkaline soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 6.5. To increase moisture retention in the ground, toss organic compost there. Compost lowers the need for regular watering and improves the soil by adding necessary nutrients. Amend the soil with limestone if it's too acidic. By ensuring the right soil conditions, the celery will grow healthier and produce tastier stalks.

Planting The Seeds

Start by sowing seeds indoors 8 to 12 weeks before the last frost. Sow only 1/8 to ½ inch deep and cover them lightly with soil. For a pot size of 8 inches, plant five seeds with 2 inches between them. Once the seedlings reach 3 inches in height, thin them to keep only the strongest plant. Keeping a single plant ensures that it receives enough nutrients and space to grow well.

Celery is a water-intensive plant, so keeping the soil moist at all times is essential. However, avoid overwatering, as this may cause root rot. A drip irrigation system works well for celery grown in containers, allowing for a steady, controlled supply of water. Self-watering containers are also a good option to maintain moisture levels efficiently. The key to successful celery growth is consistent watering.

Light And Temperature

Place the container where it will receive at least six hours of sunlight daily. Celery grows best when the daytime temperature stays between 15 to 23°C and the night temperature between 15 to 18°C. If the temperature exceeds this range, consider moving the container to a cooler spot or providing shade to prevent heat stress. This step helps prevent the celery from bolting or developing a bitter taste.

Fertilising The Plant

Use an organic fertiliser, such as fish emulsion or seaweed extract, every two weeks. Regular fertilisation ensures that the plant receives the nutrients it needs for healthy growth. Since celery is a nutrient-hungry plant, supplementing the soil with organic fertilisers helps in producing thick and tender stalks. Be careful not to over-fertilise, as this may negatively affect plant growth.

Harvesting Celery

Celery plants mature in 80 to 100 days. However, the stalks can be harvested earlier if desired. Younger stalks are often more tender and flavourful. Simply cut the outer stalks as needed, leaving the inner ones to continue growing. By harvesting stalks selectively, the plant can continue to produce for several months. Hollow or tough stalks usually indicate that the plant has not received enough water, so maintaining moisture is crucial throughout the growing period.

Shading For Mild Flavour

Celery stalks can develop a bitter taste if exposed to too much sunlight. To prevent this, bind the stalks together or cover them to block direct sunlight. This process, known as blanching, keeps the stalks tender and mild in flavour. It’s especially useful if you prefer milder celery for salads and lighter dishes. 

Dealing With Nutrient Exhaustion

Late in the growing season, some celery leaves may turn yellow. This is a sign that the plant has exhausted the nutrients in the soil. To counter this, cut down the entire plant while leaving the crown intact. The plant will regrow, offering a second harvest. If you notice yellowing early on, add more organic compost or fertiliser to replenish the soil's nutrient levels.

Extending Growth With Store-Bought Celery

A simple trick to extend your celery supply is to regrow stalks from store-bought celery. Cut off the base of the celery and plant it in the soil. Over time, it will root and send up new stalks. This method can be handy for those who wish to keep their celery supply constant without planting seeds every season.
