Almost everyone who’s been to Pune must have heard of German Bakery at some point - a recommendation from a friend, a glowing review in a food blog. The cafe which is today very much a Pune landmark, first started as a place that would cater mainly to the Sanyasis who came to live at the Osho Ashram in Pune.

As there were very few places serving Continental food then, the cafe shot to fame for its bakery products and breakfasts. It was also a cool place for people to hang out. Pune has also largely been known for its colleges, universities and educational institutions back then and although cafe culture hadn’t really come to India in those days, German Bakery became a hit with the student population and with tourists who visited Pune.

Originally, the bakery was a simple, unpretentious spot where people could enjoy freshly baked bread, pastries, and coffee. However, it quickly gained popularity, thanks to its cosy atmosphere, affordable prices, and, of course, the delicious food. Over time, the German Bakery became a gathering place for Pune’s diverse community, including students, artists, expatriates, and spiritual seekers who visited the nearby Osho International Meditation Resort.
In February 2010, the German Bakery was tragically targeted in a terrorist attack, which left 17 people dead and many others injured. The bomb blast shocked the entire nation and left a deep scar on the community. However, the bakery’s resilience and determination to rebuild became a testament to the strength of the Pune community. After a brief closure, the German Bakery reopened in 2013. Locals and diners who were regulars at the cafe were thrilled and despite the constantly growing competition the cafe managed to successfully hold its own.

What to Order At German Bakery

Germany Bakery has always been most popular for its all-day breakfast menu. The “Big Breakfast” is a popular choice, featuring eggs, sausages, toast, and a selection of jams. For a more traditional option, the bakery’s omelettes, served with freshly baked bread, are also a favourite.
Over the years the cafe has adapted skilfully to its changing customers. The variety of breads baked now include sourdough, rye, and multigrain. There are also croissants, Danish pastries, and apple strudels that are equally delightful. Of late there are also healthy options such as granola bowls, served with yoghurt and fresh fruits, and a variety of salads.

For those with a sweet tooth, the German Bakery offers a delectable selection of desserts. The chocolate brownies, cheesecakes, and carrot cake are particularly popular. Some of the most popular dishes include Fish N Chips, Bangers & Mash, Chicken A La Kyiv, Baked Blueberry Cheesecake, Apple Pie, Spinach Mushroom, fluffy Spanish Omelettes and Sachertorte.

This price range includes a couple of main dishes, beverages, and perhaps a dessert. Staying Relevant
Despite the challenges it has faced, the German Bakery remains as relevant today as it was when it first opened. Its ability to adapt to changing times is what makes it special. The bakery has embraced modern trends, offering vegan and gluten-free options to cater to contemporary dietary preferences. It has also expanded its menu to include more international dishes. Despite these changes, the bakery has retained its old-world charm, with its simple decor, wooden furniture, and the unmistakable aroma of freshly baked bread.
From its humble beginnings in 1988 to its recovery after the 2010 attack, the bakery’s resilience in the face of adversity has only strengthened its bond with the community. It continues to be a gathering place for people from all walks of life—whether it’s locals catching up with friends, tourists seeking a taste of Pune.
