There is a common misconception that individuals who follow a vegan diet may struggle to meet their nutritional needs, especially when it comes to building muscle and engaging in weight training. However, this notion is largely unfounded and based on outdated information. In reality, it is entirely possible to achieve optimal nutrition and excel in weight training while adherṣing to a vegan lifestyle. Bollywood actress Genelia Deshmukh recently took to Instagram to bust some myths about being strong enough to work out while following a vegan diet.
On her story, she posted a video of her in the gym pulling 140 kgs in weights across the floor along with the caption, ‘I’m plant-forward (vegan) and hence people often decide I cannot be strong, but it’s actually about being strong-willed, consistently training and an apt diet that makes you stronger. Stronger than you were yesterday and that’s all that matters - YOU matter.”
The actress has been vegan for about 4 years and has slowly become a staunch advocate for the lifestyle and even launched a plant-based meats company – Imagine Meats – along with her husband Riteish Deshmukh.
She’s often stated that going vegan was a huge boost to her overall health and feels like she has more energy since giving up animal-based products. A well-planned vegan diet can provide all the essential nutrients required for muscle growth, strength, and recovery. The key lies in understanding the nutritional requirements of a weight training regimen and learning how to obtain those nutrients from plant-based sources.
As part of her research when starting Imagine Meats, Genelia even took a nutrition course at Cornell University in the US to help her understand the intricacies of how to eat well on a vegan diet. Judging from her impressive feat and perfect form in her Instagram story, it seems that she’s cracked the formula and is well on the way to getting fitter and stronger every day while busting myths about veganism.
