Gasagase Payasam: A Quick Recipe You Can Try On Any Occasion

The festival season is around the corner in India. Around the month of August, we often get a lot more opportunities to celebrate isn’t it? From Onam, Ganesh Chaturthi, Janmashtami to Navratri, Durga Puja, Christmas and Diwali, each one of these festivals is celebrated with pomp and show. So of course, there are many amazing desserts that get their fair share of spotlight during this time too. Gasagase payasam is a very special dessert made from poppy seeds and coconut. In Karnataka, gasagase payasam is a popular dessert when the festive season strikes during the colder days.

If you don’t use poppy seeds very often in desserts, now is the time to give it a shot to perk up your dish. You might already know that the culinary purpose of using poppy seeds in savouries such as bagels is to impart some nutritional benefits to the breakfast snack. It is incredibly comforting to bite into a poppy seed bagel. The addition of poppy seeds brings a nice thickness to Indian curries as well. Same goes for putting poppy seeds in this delicious and healthy payasam too. The payasam also has a wonderful nuttiness as well as a rich coconut and cardamom flavour. Here’s how you can make gasagase payasam —

INGREDIENTS

- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds

- 1 tablespoon coconut

- 1 cup milk

- ¼ tablespoon jaggery

- 1 teaspoon cardamom powder

- 2-3 almonds, sliced

- 1 tablespoon rice, cooked

- Pistachios, to garnish

- Cashews, to garnish

METHOD

- In a pan, dry roast the poppy seeds and sliced almonds until they release a fragrant aroma

- Then grind them into a fine powder in a blender.

- Add coconut and 1 teaspoon of water to the powder to make a paste. Blend again.

- In another pan, heat ¼ cup of water and jaggery.

- Pour the powder into the pan.

- Add milk and cardamom powder.

- Allow it to cook for 10 minutes.

- Finally add rice to the pan.

- Stir everything together, until it thickens.

- Garnish with pistachios and cashews.

- Allow it to cool down. Serve.
