Gone are the days when food writing was considered a hobby; it’s now an enviable career choice. Food writers and editors have gone on to establish whole companies, part of which are interesting food magazines. Although the much loved Lucky Peach was shuttered in May 2017, other food magazines have stuck around and some new ones have been created. From stories talking about food origin to the cultural significance of food, these magazines have covered everything and continue to captivate readers.

Bon Appetit

One of the biggest and most popular American food magazines, Bon Appetit specialises in recipes, restaurant recommendations and food features. The magazine was started in 1956 as a giveaway at liquor stores and is now subscription-based. Bon Appetit is owned by the Conde Nast Group.

Cherry Bombe

A biannual print magazine, Cherry Bombe is independently owned and dedicated to celebrating women in food and drink. Most contributors to the magazine are also female. Cherry Bombe’s cover images are always striking and the writing is powerful. With each issue priced at $25, it’s definitely one to preserve.

Gastronomica

Gastronomica describes itself as a journal for food studies and publishes the voices of food scholars from different disciplines, from around the world. It aims to make literature about food accessible. Gastronomica’s essays focus on interdisciplinary research. The magazine also publishes poetry and chef commentary.

The Gourmand

With stunning, progressive photography, The Gourmand is a treat for the eyes and treasure for your coffee table. The biannual magazine has won many awards, with 120 pages dedicated to each issue. It was founded by David Lane and Marina Tweed in 2011. Each new issue is sold out quickly after it’s launched.

At The Table

Dedicated to British food culture, At The Table is a fabulous addition to Britain’s food writing scene that otherwise relied heavily on The Guardian. It specialises in long-form food writing and celebrates the voices of chefs, historians, artists and entrepreneurs. At The Table also hosts food-related events.
