Carissa Carandas

Often called Karvanda in Marathi, this is a popular living fence plant that is favoured for its tough, prickly stems that act as windbreaks and offer protection from cattle. Depending on the amount of sunshine and available space, it can reach heights of 7 to 10 feet and spread similarly or more widely. It can even climb up huge trees, other shrubs, fences, or rooftops. It attracts bees and other useful creatures with its fragrant flowers and thick foliage.

Mehendi Tree

Known locally as "henna," it is a widespread hedge plant found in India's dry and wet climate zones. It is a vigorously growing shrub ( 6 to 20 ft high), forms a dense hedge and is usually planted along with mulberry, cacti or jatropha. It grows well in both dry and damp regions, although it needs irrigation if planted in dry or silty soils. It is preferred for fencing due to lesser maintenance and the capacity to resist both high and low soil moisture. Wet soil cannot be tolerated.

Vitex Negundo

Large and aromatic, Vitex negundo has long been a favourite because of its adaptability to all environments and tolerance to harsh weather. It can reach heights of seven to twenty-five feet or more, growing into a dense hedge. Being evergreen, it keeps the majority of its leaves even in the driest months. Here in India, it is the most popular live fence shrub for defining boundaries around fields and plantations because it is extremely repulsive to cattle. 

Jatropha Curcas

This perennial shrub, with soft evergreen woods, can reach a height of 20 feet and is found in tropical and subtropical regions. Because it is extremely indigestible to goats and calves, it is planted alongside other plants to protect livestock along the boundaries of fields and dwellings. It grows quickly and is easily replicated from seeds or cuttings. It grows well without human assistance, is resistant to drought, and is adaptable to a variety of soil types and temperatures. To serve as a live fence, it is clipped and looped or woven into the appropriate heights.

Clerodendrum Inermis

Clerodendrum Inermis is the perfect decorative and protective plant since it gives your home's walls a captivating appearance. This plant has lovely glossy green leaves that are quite appealing. These bushes also don't draw snakes, which leaves an unpleasant smell behind. Typically, it takes these hedge plants nearly two years to mature.

Red Tecoma

Duranta Erecta

A large, multi-stemmed shrub with the fastest growth rate makes an excellent backdrop for planting and living hedges. This plant produces lovely pale blue blooms in the summer that draw butterflies. A profusion of golden orange berries follows the flowers.

Lantana
