Drinking Water The Right Way, As Per Ayurvedic Principles

When people think about good health, eating clean, hydrating and exercising are the factors that instantly come to mind. While each one has their own designated place in ensuring longevity and good health, we seldom remember the importance of doing things within moderation and doing them correctly. While this may apply to not overeating or exercising too much, it also applies to consuming the right amount of water, in the right way. What this essentially means is unlearning the ways in which we’re familiar with consuming water.

Ayurvedic principles suggest that the first step towards drinking water the right way is to sit down on a comfortable surface before taking a sip. Standing and drinking water results in the liquid directly hitting your intestinal passage, rather than going through a standard digestive process, like everything we eat and drink. The science also suggests that standing and drinking water might not be good for your knees, as it weakens the nerves holding the knee caps together.

Secondly, drinking water in small sips with intervals is known to regulate the lymphatic drainage system of our bodies as opposed to taking huge gulps. No matter how thirsty you are, sipping water sitting down means that the muscles and nerves are relaxed, which enables the water to travel through the course of our body and hydrate each cell. Even and overall hydration of the body helps in carrying more nutrients through your bloodstream, gives you healthy and supple skin and improves your vitality.

Another factor that Ayurveda strongly recommends against is to not drink any water at least 30 minutes after your meals. This is because the digestive fire or agni, as it is known is active when we consume our food and helps in assimilating and processing it within our body. Drinking water immediately after a meal means lowering the potency of the digestive enzymes present in our stomach and weaking the digestive tract altogether, in the long term. Taking small sips in-between meals is okay if it isn’t a regular habit. Ideally, try to wait for some time or avoid drinking water with your meal as much as possible.
