Depaul’s was established in 1952 by Dharampal Kathpalia, who had a passion for bringing new tastes to the city's youth. The name Depaul’s is a photonic play on the founder's name. In the beginning, Kathpalia ran a general store selling daily-use items and ready-made snacks. However, the business hit a rough patch, prompting him to focus on a more niche offering that would appeal to the young crowd that frequented Janpath. It was then that Depaul’s cold coffee began to take centre stage.

Kathpalia took his cold coffee seriously, experimenting with ingredients to create a taste that stood out. He chose high-quality ingredients like full-fat Amul milk instead of cheaper alternatives to ensure a consistent, rich flavour. His attention to detail extended to the packaging as well; Depaul’s coffee was sold in slender glass bottles that provided just the right amount of refreshment. Starting at just Rs 1, the coffee became a huge hit among college students and young professionals looking for a cool hangout spot in the heart of Delhi.
