With its raging popularity that began in the 1990s, the cosmopolitan cocktail, or ‘cosmo’, as it is more commonly known became as timeless as the show that it was mentioned in, multiple times. What was originally a rose-flavoured drink that came about in the 1930s, turned into a fashionable high-tea statement, thanks to its bright pink colour, that was a hit with the ladies. Typically made with vodka, triple sec and cranberry juice, the cosmopolitan cocktail is rather easy to recreate at home. We came up with three delicious twists to the cosmo that you can try at home, the next time it is cocktail hour somewhere in the world.

Cosmopolis

This drink is the perfect cross between a Negroni and a Manhattan and packs a stronger punch than a typical cosmopolitan would. This cocktail has a slight aniseed-y flavour, which makes it perfect to be served as an aperitif or digestif. Here’s how to make one of your own:

Ingredients

  • 30 ml citrus vodka
  • 15 ml Aperol
  • 15 ml Cointreau or triple sec
  • 1 dash cranberry bitters
  • Orange twist, for garnish

Method

  • Add all the ingredients to a mixing glass filled with ice and shake well, until combined.
  • Strain into a glass filled with more ice and flame a twisted orange peel on top, before serving.

The Paris

Inspired by the Parisian summer, this fruity version of the cocktail is just as pretty to look at, as it tastes delicious. Try swapping the regular vodka for a berry-flavoured one to enhance the overall fruity flavours of your drink and for that extra touch of rose-pink colour. Make a drink for yourself using these directions:

Ingredients

  • 30 ml raspberry vodka
  • 25 ml lemon juice
  • 30 ml cranberry juice
  • 10 ml cane syrup
  • 25 ml Midori melon liqueur

Method

  • Add all the ingredients to a mixing glass filled with ice and shake well, until combined.
  • Strain and serve chilled.

The Ginger Cosmo

Although the classic cocktail has a tart edge to it, adding some ginger flavour adds a spicy kick to your drink and allows for a variety of flavours to be experienced in a single sip. You could easily make your own ginger syrup or swap it with a pinch of dry ginger powder for a hint of earthy heat. Add a delicious twist to your drink by following the recipe below:

Ingredients

  • 45 ml vodka
  • 28 ml Cointreau
  • 28 ml lemon juice
  • 15 ml ginger syrup
  • 15 ml hibiscus infusion

Method

Shake all the ingredients together and strain into a glass of your choice. Garnish with dried cranberries or a piece of cherry.
