Christmas is around the corner and the preparations are almost done. From deciding the gift for secret Santa to planning the decorations, this festival is all about fun and enjoyment. Another exciting thing about Christmas is the food. Be it lip-smacking sweet treats or boozy drinks, one cannot resist the delicacies of Christmas.

Baking is one of the essentials of this festival. Cakes, cookies, bread, cupcakes, brownies and what not. With delicious flavours and bright colours, baking adds an extra charm to the feast of Christmas and egg is an important ingredient of baking. Its role is to create structure and stability in the batter along with adding moisture and glaze to the baked dishes.

But if you are allergic to eggs or want to make a vegetarian or vegan cake, here are five effective alternatives you can use in your cake batter:

1. Yoghurt

This is the most popular substitute of egg. Be it a cake or muffins, yogurt is an amazing addition to the batter. Just make sure, you are using unsweetened and non-flavoured one. Yogurt is also known for adding some extra fat to the batter thus, making the cake fluffier. Sixty grams of yoghurt can replace one large egg.

2. Buttermilk

This is another dairy-based substitute of egg. Just like yogurt, it is also a good substitute for cakes and muffins. Easily available in the grocery store, buttermilk can also be made at home. Remember to use the plain one without any flavour. One-fourth cup of buttermilk can be used instead of one large egg.

3. Mashed Bananas

Mashed banana is another popular alternative of egg for baking. This easy replacement can be used for cakes and muffins. The only downside of banana is that the dish may have a mild flavour of the fruit, but if you are a good baker, it can be adjusted with other ingredients. One-fourth cup of mashed banana is equal to one large egg.

4. Ground Flax Seed Or Chia Seeds

Both of these highly nutritious seeds can replace eggs for baking. They can also enhance the taste of the baked food by giving them a nutty flavour. You can grind them at home or buy the powder from the market. Mix one tablespoon of chia/flax seeds with three tablespoons of water and it works for one large egg.

5. Applesauce

This is made from cooked apples and is often sweetened or flavoured with spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. But it is recommended to use the unsweetened applesauce for baking. If not possible, you can reduce sugar in the batter and use the sweetened one. One-fourth cup of unsweetened applesauce goes for one large egg.
