Chef Vikas Relives His Childhood Memories With This Candy

Childhood memories are special, aren’t they? And let us agree that some of our favourite and most loved memories from childhood are related to food. Be it a simple pineapple cake from birthday parties or a ‘barf gola’ from a roadside cart, be it mom’s halwa or dadi’s aachar, there are some foods that have a special place in our heart. Many of these gems may not be available now but as soon as we come across them on social media or anywhere else, we get down to memory lane.

Well, it is not just you or me, but Chef Vikas Khanna also feels the same. Recently, he got nostalgic after he came across a post on social media about ‘Bombay Mithai’. Those who don’t know, ‘Bombay Mithai’ was a popular candy in the 80s and 90s, but it is hardly seen these days. Chef Khanna took to Instagram and reshared a video in which the candy seller is seen shaping the candy while some children are waiting for their turn to get the candy.

Chef Khanna wrote 'As a child growing up in India, this candy (Lachi or Bombay Mithai in India or Humbugs in America) was possibly one of the best’. He added ‘A big wooden pole with the top covered with flavored & colored sugar mixture wrapped in plastic. If I correctly remember the guy’s name used to be Bhola Bhaiya. He used to whistle to announce his arrival outside our house. He would ask the shape we wanted to eat & create it right in front of us.'

He added ‘Radha always had a flower & I kept changing between a peacock & a plane. And he will create the shape on a wooden stick like a popsicle’. So much talent & so under appreciated. So much to learn from these magicians.' After the chef’s post, many Instagram users also started sharing their videos about this candy from their childhood.
