Caudle: Have You Tried This Warming British Drink Yet?

Caudle is an ancient hot beverage that hailed from England. It is one of the drinks that recurred in various guises throughout British cuisine from the Middle Ages into Victorian times. It is a rich, thick, creamy and milky beverage that is perfect to relish in this nippy weather. Caudle is fit for wintertime as it can warm up your souls simply after a single sip. This British drink derived its name from the Latin word ‘Caldus’ that means warm. The drink can be blended in countless ways with the use of multiple ingredients as per one's taste and preference. The easiest way you can put together this hot beverage at home is by simply blending it with wine and egg yolks. Cardamom, ginger, and saffron are sprinkled over the top with a trickle of honey for extra flavouring. In Britain, a special vessel was typically designed for serving this drink. These vessels were known as ‘Spout pots’ that had two handles with a teapot-style spout on both sides. So savour the rich taste and sweetness of this old-fashioned drink by making one for yourself. Here are a few steps for making a glass of caudle at home.  

Ingredients-

  • 2 eggs
  • Half a glass of wine
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Pinch of cardamom
  • Half teaspoon ginger and saffron

Steps in the making-

  • Take a bowl and whisk both the eggs in it. Meanwhile, boil wine in a saucepan on a low flame until warm.
  • After boiling, strain it into a glass and mix it with egg yolks. Also, add a tablespoon of honey.
  • Sprinkle some cardamom, ginger, and saffron powder over the top.
  • Stir and mix well.
