- 1 teaspoon ginger, grated
- 1 green chilli, finely chopped
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
Method:
- Rinse the bajra and moong dal under running water. Soak them in water separately for about 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Heat ghee in a pressure cooker or a heavy-bottomed pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add grated ginger, chopped green chilli, and asafoetida. Sauté for a minute.
- Add the soaked bajra and moong dal to the pan. Stir well to combine with the tempering.
- Sprinkle turmeric powder and salt over the mixture. Give it a good stir.
- Pour 4 cups of water into the pressure cooker or pan. Cover and cook on medium heat. If using a pressure cooker, cook for about 4-5 whistles. If using a pan, simmer until the bajra and dal are tender and cooked thoroughly. It may take around 45 minutes to 1 hour.
- Once cooked, let the pressure release naturally. Open the cooker or pan and give the khichdi a gentle mix. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if desired.
