Appe For Breakfast: 5 Varieties To Try

Talking particularly about South India, the cuisine has given us plenty of dishes to relish in the morning, idli-sambar, dosa, vada, pongal, upma and so on. These dishes are popular all across the country and you can find a lot of variations in their recipes based on the region. Another famous South Indian breakfast is appe. Made with idli batter, it is a crunchy ball that is soft and fluffy from inside and firm from outside. Appe is mostly served with sambar or coconut chutney.

Rice Appe 

This is the authentic variety of appe which is made with rice and urad dal. They are fermented and cooked along with spices like cumin seeds, mustard and asafoetida. You can elevate the taste of your dish by serving it along with idli podi masala or gun powder. 

Oats Appe 

This version of appe is made with oats and vegetables. Oats appe is more nutritious than the rice appe, as it is low in calories, high in fiber, and packed with essential vitamins and minerals. You can easily customize this dish with your favourite vegetables and spices. It can be enjoyed as an evening snack as well. 

Moong Dal Appe

Moong dal appe is prepared by grinding soaked lentils into a batter and then it seasoning with spices and cooking in the appe pan. This crispy and savory dish can be enjoyed with any chutney or sauce. Moong dal appe is a great source of protein and fiber, making it a healthy choice for a light breakfast. 

Mix Veg Appe 

Made by blending together a batter of rice and lentils, this dish is made with the goodness of a variety of chopped vegetables such as carrots, capsicum, onions, and peas. Served hot with chutney or sambar, mix veg appe is a delicious and interesting way to include veggies in your breakfast. 

Rava Appe 

Rava or sooji appe is made with a batter of semolina, curd and veggies. It has an extremely simple recipe that does not take time to ferment like other varieties of appe. Just let the batter rest for twenty minutes and mix a few veggies and cook in the appe pan. Serve hot with your favourite chutney and enjoy.
