Traditional Sweets See A 55% Surge In Pre-Festive Sales: Report

Do you crave some creamy kheer or some hearty gulab jamuns after a festive dinner? You’re not the only one! A new report has revealed that traditional sweets have surged ahead of other Western options.

A B2B company called Scandalous Foods released a comprehensive survey report which highlights the strong preference for traditional Indian sweets, which have overtaken Western desserts and ice creams in festive consumption trends. The survey, conducted among more than 1,000 consumers and 100 restaurants, reveals that classic Indian mithais now make up 55% of festive dessert sales.

In contrast, Western desserts account for only 25%, with ice creams and chocolates comprising the remaining 20%. Popular choices include Rasmalai, Gulab Jamun, and fusion creations like Rasmalai Tiramisu, particularly in the HoReCa (Hotel, Restaurant, and Café) segment.

The company credits this growth to various factors, including the rising demand for healthier and innovative dessert options, alongside a pricing strategy that appeals to both consumers and businesses. Additionally, the expansion of their distribution network from 400 to over 1,500 touchpoints in just the past year has significantly boosted the availability and accessibility of these popular sweets, especially during the festive season.

Sanket S, co-founder, Scandalous Foods, said, "It has never been in doubt that Indian sweets are world-beaters when it comes to satisfying sweet cravings, especially during festive seasons. Our latest survey reinforces that traditional mithais continue to hold a special place in the hearts of Indian consumers, particularly in moments of celebration. As we scale our operations and innovate with fusion desserts, we are excited to meet the evolving demands of the market while staying true to the rich heritage of Indian sweets."
