The people, places and produce that encapsulate the process of making wine... these are the subjects captured in the winners' photographs in the 'Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year' category of the recently announced Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year 2023 awards.

'Girl After Emptying a Tank at the End of the Fermentation' by Thierry Gaudillère took home the overall prize in the category, in addition to placing first in the "People" segment. It depicts a young woman resting after emptying a vat in which grapes have been fermented, at a vineyard in Burgundy.

As part of our ongoing coverage of the Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year 2023, we're taking a look at the nine winning entries across the three segments (People/Places/Produce) in this category, that capture the thrill and toil of wine-making.

3rd | 'Open the Valves', by Lucile Carmet / Vitinova

The grapes have become wine. During the vinification, it is a festival of colours. Pumping over consists of sending the must from the bottom to the top of the vat, to wet the marc cap and extract all the matter it contains. Harvest 2022, Languedoc, France.

2nd | 'Like a Tropical Cellar', by Rodolphe Travel / Vitinova

In the south of France, in the Languedoc region, we push open the door of the Domaine de Belle-Mare. The wine-making cellar is bathed in light and the shadows of the surrounding olive trees. We are just a few metres from the Thau Lagoon, which is connected to the Mediterranean Sea and whose sea spray refreshes the sun-drenched vines.

3rd | 'Uranus and Mark', by Sarah Jaeggi

A moment of pure endurance and strength in the Swiss vineyards: Uranus and his guide are ploughing this plot whose inclination is too steep for any machinery. A simpler method of agriculture, paced by the horse.
