Most urban Indian kitchens utilise LPG cylinders or pipelines to cook everyday meals and while seasoned cooks find installing LPG cylinders to be child’s play, installing them correctly in the kitchen is essential for safety. Here are five simple but effective tips to ensure the safety of yourself as well as others.
Suitable Location
Select a well-ventilated area in your kitchen for the gas cylinder installation. Ensure that the location is away from any heat sources, electrical appliances, or flammable materials. Familiarizing oneself with the local regulations and guidelines regarding gas cylinder installation. These regulations may vary from one region to another, so it's important to comply with the specific requirements in your area.
Securing
Place the gas cylinder in an upright position and secure it using a cylinder stand or clamp. This helps prevent accidental tipping or rolling, which could cause damage to the cylinder or gas leakage. Ideally have a small trolley that can be placed under the base of the cylinder so that it is easy to move it away, in the event of an emergency.
Check For Leaks
Before connecting the gas cylinder, inspect the regulator and rubber tubing for any signs of damage. Apply a solution of soapy water to the connections and look for bubbles, which indicate a gas leak. If you detect a leak, tighten the connections or replace faulty parts before proceeding. Be conscious about using a regulator specifically designed for the type of gas you are using. Since gas cylinders contain different gases, such as propane or butane, each gas requires a specific regulator. Using the wrong regulator can lead to gas leaks or other safety hazards.
Connect Properly
Attach the regulator to the cylinder valve by aligning the threads and turning it clockwise until it is firmly secured. Use a wrench, if necessary, but be careful not to overtighten, as it may damage the threads. Inversely, fasten the thread firmly enough but not too loose that it might come undone.

Conducting Safety Checks
Once the regulator is connected, open the cylinder valve slowly and briefly to check for any noticeable gas leaks. Do not use a flame to check for leaks, as it can be dangerous. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, immediately close the cylinder valve and rectify the issue before using the gas. Consulting a professional gas technician or contact your gas service provider for guidance and assistance is also advisable if it is your first time.
