Here are 4 foods that should be consumed in limited amounts to prevent tooth enamel decay.
1. Citrus fruits
Fruits like orange and lemon are citrus fruits. Though they are great for cough and cold, what cannot be ignored is that they are highly acidic in nature. Frequent consumption can lead to erosion of the enamel over time.
2. Sour Candies and chewing gums
Anything that’s sticky will cling to the spaces between your teeth even after you’ve eaten it. They contain acids too and since they remain in your mouth for a longer, it impacts the enamel negatively.
3. Pickles
The tangy pickles usually have a hint of lime that lends them the flavor. Since you bite into these pickles, their acid comes in contact with your enamel, leading to decay.
4. Carbonated drinks
Sugary, carbonated drinks contain acid as well as huge amounts of sugar. These tend to stick to the teeth, wearing away the enamel slowly.
In early stages of tooth enamel erosion, you’ll notice sensations in your teeth when eating something really hot or cold or a sweet item. You may even see some discoloration in your teeth as they tend to become yellow since the enamel wears off and the teeth are exposed.
In such cases, you can take the following measures to prevent any further decay.
1. Wash/ Rinse your mouth after every meal. This will wash away all the acids remaining in your mouth. Do this especially after consuming something sweet or acidic in nature.
2. Brush frequently. Apart from rinsing, brushing your teeth with a sensitive toothbrush is a good option.
3. Use a straw whenever you drink something acidic. And keep drinking water to keep your teeth clear of any remaining food.
NOTE: It is not necessary to completely eliminate these foods from your diet. You can consume them in moderation.
