This is a spiced version of the classic winter drink that is prepared along with the flavour of cinnamon stick, star anise and ground chilli. Here is an easy recipe to make spiced hot chocolate for the chilly season.

3 cups milk 2 tablespoons cocoa powder 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla essence ½ teaspoon grated nutmeg A pinch of ground chilli or cayenne pepper 1-2 cinnamon sticks 3-4 star anise

In a pot over low heat, mix together milk, cocoa, maple syrup, vanilla essence, nutmeg and chilli.

Add in cinnamon sticks and star anise and bring it to a simmer.

Remove it from heat, cover and leave to steep for at least an hour.

Before serving, warm the drink on low heat. Adjust the taste and enjoy.
