The classic side dish to accompany Sarso ka Saag is Makki ki Roti, a flatbread made of maize flour. The earthy mustard greens go well with the strong maize flavour.
To counteract the bitter taste of mustard greens, gur or jaggery is a common accompaniment to Sarso ka Saag. The addition of a little gur brings a touch of sweetness, bringing out the best in the combination of flavours.
The richness of white butter adds a creamy texture and indulgent taste to the meal. A dollop of safed makkhan on warm Makki ki Roti and Sarso ka Saag elevates the dining experience.
A glass of chaas, or buttermilk, is a cool and refreshing side dish that goes well with the rich and flavorful Sarso ka Saag. It helps your body process food and makes the spicy food taste better.
A spicy and sour radish pickle makes the whole meal taste better. There is a nice contrast between the sharpness of the pickle and the creaminess of the saag.
A crunchy and pungent component to the dish is provided by thinly sliced raw onions. They offer a nice crunch to the saag either combined with it or eaten separately.
