Why Is Pongal A South Indian Favourite

Pongal is a popular South Indian Rice dish. The two varieties of Pongal are Chakarai Pongal which is sweet and Venn Pongal which is made from clarified butter. Where the Venn Pongal is very famous during occasions, the Chakarai Pongal is made especially during The Pongal Festival in Tamil Nadu.

Ingredients: 1 cup rice 2 tablespoon ghee 1 pinches asafoetida 1 handful of curry leaves 5 cashews ½ teaspoon turmeric ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 2 teaspoon ginger paste 1 cup moong dal Water as needed Salt to taste

Pressure cook moong dal and rice with salt. Prepare a tadka of ghee, jeera, ginger garlic paste, hing, black pepper, curry leaves and cashews. Add the tadka and stir till mixed properly. Serve hot with chutney or pickle
