Victoria Toast Is Kolkata's Secret Street Food

Delicious bite-sized pieces of bread topped with an assortment of veggies and a sprinkling of Muri Masala, this is the after school treat that Kolkata locals reminisce about.

Muri Masala

1 tbsp jeera 1 tbsp coriander seeds 1 tbsp black peppercorns 1 tsp black salt ½ tsp red chilli powder Salt to taste Method: Dry roast all the spices and grind them into a fine powder.

Victoria Toast

3-4 slices of bread 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 potato, boiled and chopped 1 tomato, chopped 1 onion, chopped 2-3 green chillies, chopped 1 tbsp green chutney 2-3 tbsp chopped coconut 1 tbsp tamarind chutney 3 tbsp roasted peanuts 1 tsp muri masala or more 1 tbsp lemon juice ½ cup sev Coriander leaves, to garnish

Step 1

Mix the potatoes, onion, tomato and chilli with the green chutney, tamarind chutney, coconut, peanuts, sev, salt and more muri masala.

Step 2

Spread a small amount of tamarind chutney on each piece of bread add the veggies mixture and garnish with coriander, sev, peanuts, coconut, muri masala and lime
