Varanasi, also known as Kashi, houses the Kashi Vishwanath temple, dedicated to Shiva or Mahadev. Varanasi Bhang Lassi is a must-try beverage among this city's many culinary offerings. This lassi is a local tradition since Lord Shiva enjoys bhang.
Lassi is a popular Indian sweet drink prepared with thick curd and sugar. Bhang is an edible form of Indian marijuana, or cannabis green (fresh) leaves mashed into a paste. Bhang lassi is a blend of both.
Psychoactive drink bhang causes mild exhilaration and stimulation. Cannabis leaves are steeped overnight and mixed with some ingredients. This gives the drink an earthy flavour and serving it in a clay pot adds a natural scent.
Many wonder about bhang's legitimacy in India. Cannabis resin and flowers are illegal under the 1985 NDPS Act. Seeds, stems, and leaves can all be used. Bhang is legal as it employs the leaves.
There are several shops across Varanasi selling this beverage. But the most recommended ones are Blue Lassi, Green Lassi and Badal Thandai to sample Varanasi Bhang Lassi.
For the first timers, it is advisable to have a light version of Varanasi Bhang Lassi. It usually takes 30 minutes to an hour or 2, for the bhang to give you high.
Don't gulp it like water if you don't get the kick immediately. Restrict to 1 glass. Keep sipping water and eat something. Be in safe company.
