While each region has their own set of special dishes for winter, Uttar Pradesh boasts of chunki matar. If you haven’t heard of it before, here’s what it is about.
For the unversed, it is a mixture of fresh green shelled peas that are tempered with a tadka of cumin and ginger generally and served hot in winters.
Since it is widely available during winters in the region of Uttar Pradesh, the dish is commonly eaten for breakfast alongside delicious pairings.
Tempered in different ways, western UP relishes cumin-ginger tadka while the eastern parts prefer garlic and green chillies in mustard oil. Moreover, hing and jeera is also eaten in some other parts of UP.
Some households top it on a hot buttered toast and some others pair it with fried aloo tikkis. Some make it into a yummy snack by mixing fried chivda with chunki matar.
Not just UP, chunki matar, also known as matar ki ghugni is often savoured in Bihar too.
