Ujju Rasam: A Soothing South Indian Broth for Your Soul

Ujju Rasam is a fragrant and soothing South Indian broth, prepared with aromatic spices to provide a comforting and calming experience for your senses and palate.

For Rasam

½ cup toor dal, 4-5 Kashmiri dry red chillies, 4 Guntur chillies, 4 Green chillies, 2 Inch ginger piece, 8-10 garlic cloves, Handful fresh coriander, 2 sprig curry leaves, ½ cup coriander seeds, 1 tbsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp Mustard seeds, 15-20 Peppercorns, ½ tsp Methi seeds, 4 large tomatoes, 1 big onion, Salt, to taste, Juice of 4 lemons, Water, as required  

Tempering 

1-2 tbsp ghee/oil 1 tsp Mustard seeds ½ tsp Hing 2 Broken red chillies   Garnish 2 sprig Curry leaves, chopped 2 tbsp Coriander leaves, chopped

Step 1 

Add all the ingredients mentioned for the rasam and let it boil for about an hour, till the dal is cooked properly. Once done, strain it and take out the liquid in a kadai. Mash it well, so that all the liquid is taken out.

Step 2

Now switch on the stove and let it come to a boil. Add chopped curry leaves, and coriander leaves and mix well. Add the tadka and serve hot. (You can use the leftover mashed dal and spice mixture to make a paratha or puri)
