Turkey’s Kahvalti Breakfast Has Something For Everyone

By Jasmine Kaur

The delicious Turkish breakfast spread is known to be the traditional way the locals dine. It comprises of bite-sized items laid on out on a platter.

These include cheese, cured meats, bread, spreads, jam and fruit preserves but the most important component has to be the Turkish black tea.

Cheese

Feta cheese, known as beyaz peynir, is the most commonly-eaten cow milk cheese. Others include kasseri from sheep’s milk and tulum, a semi-dry hard cheese, usually paired with bread.

Eggs

In Turkish breakfast, the most popular eggs are sucuklu yumurta i.e. eggs with spicy beef sausages. Other than this, menemen (scrambled Turkish eggs) are also consumed.

Bread

Those familiar with Turkish cuisine are aware of how important bread is for any meal. Simit, a local ring-shaped bread coated with sesame seeds is paired with cheese and spreads.

Spreads

Be it the savoury black olive spread or sweet hazelnut ones like Nutellla, the Turks love it all. In case of jams, they prefer apricot and cherry for kahvalti.

Beverages

Kahvalti is incomplete without a generous pouring of Turkish black tea, that is sipped long after the eating is complete, making it a way to chat and interact with the family more.
