A sandwich without bread? That would fix all of our problems! Bread has quite a few empty calories which we can do without. If you're craving sandwich at home, try the viral moong dal sandwich which is healthy and nutritious!
– 1 cup moong dal – 8 slices of bread – 1 onion, finely chopped – 1 tomato, finely chopped – 1 green chili, finely chopped – 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste – 1/2 teaspoon turmeric – 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder – 1/2 teaspoon coriander – Salt to taste – Butter or ghee – Fresh coriander leaves – Chaat masala (optional)
Rinse the moong dal thoroughly and soak it in water for about 30 minutes. Then, drain the water.
Pressure cook the soaked moong dal with 2 cups of water, turmeric powder, and salt for about 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and cooked through
In a pan, heat a little oil or ghee. Add ginger-garlic paste and chopped green chili and sauté for a minute until fragrant. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy. Now, add the cooked moong dal to the pan along with cumin powder and coriander powder.
Mix well and cook for a few minutes until everything is well combined and the mixture thickens slightly. Add salt and spices.
Once the mixture is ready, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. Take slices of bread and spread a generous amount of the moong dal mixture on one slice.
Place another slice of bread on top, and optionally, spread butter or ghee on the outer sides of the sandwich. Grill the sandwich on a panini press or in a skillet until golden brown.
