Viral dessert trends sometimes end up giving us the quickest ways to sweeten our palate. The viral mousse cake offers one such formula to make ourselves a lazy, but delicious dessert. Not only is this luscious and binge-worthy but can also be made for a larger group of people. Let's explore.
– 1 ½ cups (approximately 270g) semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate – 1 ½ cups (360ml) heavy whipping cream Optional toppings: – Fresh berries – Powdered sugar for dusting
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until smooth and fully melted. Let the melted chocolate cool slightly while you prepare the whipped cream.
In a large mixing bowl, pour in the heavy whipping cream. Using an electric mixer or a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip the cream on medium-high speed until it reaches stiff peaks.
Once the melted chocolate has cooled slightly fold in about one-third of the whipped cream into the melted chocolate using a spatula.
Gradually add the remaining whipped cream in two or three additions, folding gently until no streaks remain and the mixture is smooth and evenly combined. Be gentle to maintain the light and airy texture of the mousse.
Line a 9-inch (23cm) round springform pan with parchment paper or plastic wrap, leaving some overhang for easy removal. Pour the chocolate mousse mixture into the prepared pan and spread it out evenly with a spatula.
Cover the pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate the mousse cake for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight. Once the cake has set, remove it from the refrigerator and unmold it from the pan.
