Tomato Saar: A Comforting Maharashtrian Soup For Winter Meals

This tangy and comforting soup is a gift from the Maharashtrian cuisine. Prepared with tomatoes, coconut paste and spices, it can be enjoyed on its own or paired with steamed rice. Here is an easy recipe to make tomato saar:

Ingredients

5-6 tomatoes chopped, 1 cup coconut, 6 cloves garlic, 1 tsp cumin seeds, salt to taste, ½ tsp red chilli powder, 2 tbsp oil/ghee, 1 tsp mustard seeds, a pinch of asafoetida, 8-10 curry leaves, 3-4 green chillies slit, 2-3 tbsp sugar, ¼ cup fresh coriander leaves chopped

Step 1

Grind coconut, garlic and jeera into a smooth paste. Add salt and chilli powder to the tomatoes and transfer them into a pan with 3 cups of water. Bring it to a boil.

Step 2

Simmer for 15 minutes and puree after it cools down. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard, hing and curry leaves.

Step 3

Add tomato puree and chillies and bring it to a boil. Then add sugar.

Step 4

Add coconut and prepared spice paste. Cook on low flame for 10 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
