You can avoid crying when chopping onions. Keep your eyes from watering while handling onions by following these tips.
Chill the onion for 30 minutes before chopping it. This may lessen the production of chemicals that cause tears.
The portion of the onion most likely to cause tears is located at its base. It's safer to leave it alone until the very end.
Put a candle near where you'll be cutting. Burning the onion in a flame can help neutralise the noxious substances it produces.
Put the onion in water or use running water to chop it. The chemicals are removed from the eyes and the discomfort is lessened by doing this.
To reduce the amount of tear-inducing substances released, consider using a food processor or specialised onion chopper.
