Throwing Out Your Extra Herbs? Save Them Instead

By Shireen Jamooji

A burst of fresh herbs is the best way to finish almost any dish. But unfortunately, it's hard to use them all up before they start to go sad and soggy. Here are 5 ways you can save herbs without throwing them out.

Freeze Them

The quickest way to preserve your herbs is to stick them in the freezer. Make sure the leaves are washed and dried, before sealing them in an airtight freezer bag.

Herb Butter

Chop the herbs very finely and then mix them with softened butter. This can then be used as a flavourful addition to any dish.

Herb Oil

Herb oil isn't just for gourmet restaurants, you can make it too. Just add your herbs to boiling hot oil and then blend and strain it into a clear seasoning oil.

Pasta Sauce

Did you know you can make different types of pestos? Just substitute basil with whatever soft herbs you have on hand.

Dry Them

To preserve them for a long time, dry them out in a very low oven or microwave and crush them up. They won't be as strong, but will last longer.
