On Janmashtami, many milk-based sweets are prepared by devotees, one of which is makhana kheer. It is a crucial part of the bhog offered to Lord Krishna. Here is its quick recipe.
¾ cups sugar 1 cup makhana ½ tsp nutmeg powder 2 tbsp ghee A few strands of saffron 5 cups full-fat milk
Heat ghee in a pan and saute makhana or lotus seeds in it until crunchy.
Once they have cooled off, grind a few into a coarse powder and break others into small pieces.
Boil milk in a heavy-bottom pan and dissolve sugar in it.
Once the milk comes to a boil, add makhana powder and crushed lotus seeds in it.
Let the ingredients simmer on low flame. Garnish with dry fruits and saffron strands.
Refrigerate the kheer and serve it cold.
