If there’s something that the British can do without on Christmas day, it is this bread sauce. But why is it so special?
For the unversed, the bread sauce is made with a combination of soaked breadcrumbs, dunked in milk, with festive spices like nutmeg, mace and cloves.
It is believed that the bread sauce has existed since the ancient times of Medieval England when cooks used bread as a thickening agent for sauces since it was cheap and accessible.
The humble bread sauce is a not-so flavourful and bland mesh of soggy bread that is light and easy to make without any complex flavours, as opposed to the rest of the Christmas delicacies.
Since the sauce is so bland, it perfectly complements the special Christmas roasts like turkey and duck. Moreover, it pairs well with honey-glazed carrots and Brussel sprouts too.
While many of the delicacies at the Christmas feast might alter, it is the bread sauce that remains unchanged and is intrinsic to British Christmas celebrations.
