In Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine originating from India, shadrasa refers to the six fundamental tastes that are essential for maintaining balance in the body and promoting overall well-being. Each taste plays a unique role in nourishing the body and satisfying the senses. 

Sweet  

Sweet taste is nourishing and grounding, providing energy and promoting a sense of satisfaction. Foods rich in natural sugars, such as fruits, grains, and root vegetables, fall into this category. 

Sour  

Sour taste stimulates the appetite, aids digestion, and helps balance excess sweetness in the body. Foods like citrus fruits, yoghurt, and fermented products exhibit sour taste. 

Salty 

Salty taste supports electrolyte balance, enhances flavour, and stimulates digestion. It is found in foods like sea salt, seaweed, and salty cheeses. 

Bitter 

Bitter taste detoxifies the body, purifies the blood, and aids in digestion. Leafy greens, bitter gourds, and herbs like neem are examples of bitter foods. 

Pungent 

Pungent taste stimulates metabolism, improves circulation, and promotes sweating. Spices such as chili peppers, garlic, and ginger exhibit a pungent taste. 

Astringent 

Astringent taste tightens and tones tissues, promotes healing, and balances excess moisture in the body. Foods like legumes, green tea, and certain fruits like pomegranate possess an astringent taste.
