The delectable misal that one finds in every nook and corner of Maharashtra is a rich and nutritious protein-loaded veg dish that one can have for breakfast.
For the unversed, it is a healthy sprouts-based curry made with moth beans, tomatoes and onions and garnished with sev. It is usually paired with pav.
Did you know that misal is another word for a mixture of everything? That’s why you will find different veggies packed in this curry.
It first appeared in a 20th century text and is said to have been made in Nasik by two eateries who prepared a wholesome curry for the daily wage workers.
While the workers got bhakri, a type of flatbread with them, it wasn’t enough to satiate them through the day. So misal was invented and was paired with a bun called pav.
While the classic misal consists of moth beans, there are specialties like Nagpuri, Khandeshi, Puneri misal and more. The former, for instance, is garnished with grated coconut.
This yummy curry can range from mildly spicy to hot and fiery, depending upon the region in which it is made.
