Tea is a beloved beverage that is enjoyed all over the world. But do you know about The Great British Tea Heist? Read on to find out.
China was the only producer and exporter of tea in the world until 170 years ago.
The monopoly was broken 1848 when the East India Company sent Scottish botanist Robert Fortune on a covert mission to steal its plants and tea-processing technique.
Fortune disguised himself as Mandrin official and infiltrated the green tea factory located in Wu Si Shan hills, a place which was forbidden to foreigners.
He discreetly gathered the samples and smuggled it out of China and brought them to London.
His discoveries were showcased at The Great Exhibition Of 1851, and it allowed the British to manufacture their own tea.
