A speciality from the Malabar region of Kerala, Arikadukka is a pakoda variety made with mussels. Here’s the easy recipe you need to make this monsoon-special treat at home today!
15 fresh mussels 2 cups rice flour ¼ cup dessicated coconut 4-5 shallots, chopped ½ tsp cumin seeds ½ tsp fennel seeds 1 green chilli, chopped ½ tsp ginger paste 1 sprig curry leaves Salt, to taste Oil, to fry For the batter: 2 tbsp rice flour ½ tsp turmeric powder 2 tsp red chilli powder Salt, to taste ½ cup water
Scrub the mussel shells and boil the mussels till the shells open. Drain the open mussels and set aside.
Grind the coconut, shallots, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, ginger, chillies and curry leaves into a coarse powder.

Add the rice flour, salt and some water to make a smooth dough, then stuff the dough in the opened mussel shells while encasing the flesh of the seafood.

Steam the stuffed mussels for 15-20 minutes, let them cool, then gently scoop out the dough-encased mussels mix so that it holds the shell-like shape.
Place all the batter ingredients in a bowl and make a slightly thick batter.
Heat oil in a wok. Dip the steamed mussel dough in the batter then deep fry until golden brown.
