Tomato Pappu, South Indian dish made with lentils, ripe tomatoes, and a blend of traditional spices. Tampered with some curry leaves and mustard seeds, this dish is comforting, tangy, and protein-rich.
1 cup toor dal (pigeon peas) 2 tomatoes, chopped 1 onion, chopped 2 green chilies, slit 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1 tsp red chili powder 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds A pinch of asafoetida (hing) Few curry leaves 2 tbsp oil or ghee Salt to taste Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Rinse the toor dal under water and pressure cook it with 3 cups of water until soft, Set aside.
Heat oil, Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves, and sauté.
Add chopped onions and green chilies to the pan. Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and cook.
Now Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Pour in the cooked toor dal and mix well.
Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed. Allow the pappu (dal) to simmer on low heat for about 10-15 minutes.
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with steamed rice or roti. Enjoy!
