Tamarind Rice:  A Tangy And Sour Delicacy From South India

Tamarind rice is a speciality in South India. You get it as prasad in a lot of South Indian temples and it's easy to make at home as well. It's eaten with chips, sprouts or even curd. It's quite easy to make and is traditionally called "Puliyodharai." Here's the recipe to make Tamarind Rice.

Ingredients

2 Cups rice 1/2 cup tamarind (made into pulp) 3 Whole red chillies 1/4 cup curry leaves A pinch of asafoetida 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tbsp chana dal 1 tsp urad dal 1/4 tsp methi seeds 1/2 tsp red chillli powder 1 tbsp peanuts 1 tsp salt 1/4 tsp turmeric powder 1/4 tsp gur Oil

Step 1

Heat oil and roast peanuts and both the dals together. Add curry leaves and red chillies. Saute until they sputter. Add salt, hing and turmeric powder and keep sauteing.

Step 2

Add gur to the mix and add the tamarind pulp. Saute and mix them well. To this, add rice and saute until the rice is mixed completely. Serve hot with chips or curd or even plain.
