Since the holiday season is in full swing now, what would be a better time to unveil the history of mulled wine than now. Here’s what makes it so special.
While different cultures have their own versions of mulled wine, it is generally a sweet and fragrant beverage made with red wine and spices and sipped during winters.
It is believed that the first evidence of such wine was found in Rome in the 2nd century, where the red wine was blended with spices and consumed during Christmas time.
The use certain spices like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and cloves lend the drink a strong flavour. Another feature of this drink is that less amount of alcohol is used.
Swedish people drink Glogg, made with fruity red wine while Germans like their Gluhwein with vanilla pods, lemon and sugar. Russia’s Glintwein is quite similar to Germany while Italy sips on Vin brule.
It is said that it is an aromatic beverage that has healing properties and can keep the body warm during winters.
