South Indian style coconut chutney is a staple condiment that perfectly complements dishes like idli, dosa, and vada. Its creamy texture and vibrant flavours make it a beloved accompaniment in South Indian cuisine.
1 cup grated fresh coconut 2 tablespoons roasted chana dal (Bengal gram) 2 green chillies 1-inch piece ginger 1/2 cup water (adjust as needed) Salt to taste 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 1 teaspoon urad dal (split black gram) 2 dried red chillies 8-10 curry leaves 1 tablespoon oil
In a blender, combine grated coconut, roasted chana dal, green chillies, ginger, and salt. Add water gradually and blend to a smooth paste. Adjust the consistency with more water if necessary.
In a small pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add urad dal, dried red chillies, and curry leaves, and sauté until the dal turns golden brown.
Pour the tempering over the coconut chutney and mix well. Serve immediately with idli, dosa, vada, or any dish.
