A traditional apple pie is one of the few treats that may make you feel at home. A classic American pastry with a flaky crust and a spiced apple filling, this dessert has stood the test of time.

Ingredients

6 cups of thinly sliced, peeled apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) 3/4 cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 package refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade if preferred) 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Roll out one pie crust and place it into a 9-inch pie dish. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Mix until the apples are evenly coated.

Step 2

Spoon the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust, mounding it slightly in the centre. Dot the top of the apples with the pieces of butter. Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the apple filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal the pie.

Step 3

Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking. Optionally, brush the top crust with milk and sprinkle with sugar for a golden finish. Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips and bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Step 4

Allow the pie to cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before serving. Serve slices of warm apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the perfect comforting dessert.
