Paryushan 2023: 8 Jain No Onion Garlic Dishes To Make For The Festival

Paryushan, a festival falling between 12-20th September is an important part of the Jain calendar.  It marks a time of abstinence where devotees avoid all sorts of fresh ingredients along with the usual onion, potato, garlic and other root vegetables. 

Dal Dhokli

Wheat flour dumplings simmered in a mild curry made with chawli.

Plain Upma

A hearty semolina dish, cooked with mild spices and garnished with cashews and dried curry leaves.

Curd Rice

Creamy yoghurt mixed with rice, tempered with simple spices, a soothing meal.

Lapsi

Sweet, cracked wheat dessert cooked with ghee, garnished with nuts and raisins.

Moong Dal Khichdi

A nourishing blend of rice and split mung beans, lightly spiced and easy on the stomach.

Fulwadi

This deep-fried snack prepared from coarse besan and seasoned with spices is a popular Jain snack.

Gud Ka Sheera

A comforting sweet semolina pudding, enriched with jaggery and ghee.

Sabudana Khichdi
