Indulge in Pahadi Chaunsa Dal, often called Chainsoo Dal, for a taste of the rustic Uttrakhandi cuisine. This filling and traditional dish originates from the hilly regions of India and is full of healthy ingredients.
1 cup chaunsa dal 2 cups water 1 medium onion, finely chopped 2 tomatoes, chopped 2 green chilies, slit 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste ½ teaspoon turmeric powder 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 1 teaspoon coriander powder Salt to taste 1 tablespoon ghee or oil Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Wash and soak chaunsa dal in water for 30 minutes. In a pressure cooker, heat ghee or oil and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, and sauté for a minute. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until tomatoes are soft.
Drain the soaked dal and add it to the cooker. Stir well to combine. Add water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until dal is cooked.
Once cooked, garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti. Enjoy the comforting flavours of Pahadi Chaunsa Dal!
