Chakli is a favourite Indian snack for its crunchy texture and spicy flavour, especially during Diwali. If you do not have a chakli maker, do not worry! There are many ways to make this snack without it. Here are some easy alternatives:
Use a piping bag with a star nozzle or cut a corner off a ziplock bag. Fill it with chakli dough and pipe spirals onto a plate or directly into hot oil.
Roll the dough into a thin sheet and cut into strips. Shape the strips into spirals or small circles by hand for a rustic look.
Flatten small portions of dough into discs using a bottle cap and coil each disc to form the chakli shape.
Roll thin strips of dough and press onto the edges of an idli plate to form small chakli spirals.
Divide the dough into small balls, roll them into thin cylinders by hand and shape them into chakli.
Use a cookie press with a star nozzle to make chaklis. This will give you a similar shape and texture to the traditional maker.
If you have a small mould with star ridges, use it to press out the dough into chakli shapes.
