Grapes

Fish

In Chinese culture, fish is associated with surplus and prosperity. Having a big whole fish on your plate represents unity in the family. Fish soup and steamed fish are popular choices.

Soba Noodles

In Japan, it's a tradition to eat toshikoshi soba, or buckwheat noodles, on New Year's Eve. The long noodles signify longevity, and eating long noodles symbolises that the New Year will be refreshing with lots of luck, leaving behind the old year.

Pomegranate Salad

In many Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures, pomegranates are considered a symbol of good luck, fertility, and prosperity. Pomegranate is also sprinkled in dishes served at the New Year party.

Collard Greens and Cornbread

In the Southern United States, it is believed that eating collard greens and cornbread manifests wealth because of the similarity of colours: collard greens represent money, and cornbread represents gold.

Pork and Sauerkraut

In some European and American traditions, pork is considered a symbol of progress and prosperity. It signifies an abundance of resources which will last till the end of next year.

Round Fruits

Similar to the grape tradition in Spain, eating round fruits in the Philippines is considered lucky. It also signifies the overall abundance and prosperity when entering the new year and eating round fruits.
