Makhana (fox nuts) are an excellent snack during fasting. Light, nutritious, and easy to digest, they provide sustained energy. Rich in protein, fibre, and essential minerals, makhana can be roasted or fried with minimal ingredients, making it a perfect fasting-friendly food. Follow these tips to make them crunchy.
Roast the makhana in a dry pan on low heat for 5-7 minutes before adding oil or ghee. This removes moisture, ensuring they get crispier.
Use a non-stick or heavy-bottomed pan and add 1-2 teaspoons of ghee or oil.
Toss in the makhana and roast on low heat, stirring continuously.
Fry on low to medium heat to cook them evenly and prevent burning. Slow roasting helps them become perfectly crispy.
Keep roasting for 8-10 minutes until they turn light golden and become crunchy.
Add a pinch of salt, black pepper, or chaat masala for flavour while still hot. You can also sprinkle some red chili powder or amchur (dry mango) powder for extra tang.
Once fried and seasoned, let the makhana cool before storing it in an airtight container to retain its crunch.
