Moong Dal Payasam is a creamy South Indian dessert made with roasted moong dal, jaggery, and coconut milk. Flavoured with cardamom and garnished with ghee-fried cashews and raisins, this comforting sweet treat is perfect for festive occasions or a wholesome indulgence.

Ingredients

1/2 cup yellow moong dal 1/2 cup jaggery 1 cup coconut milk 2 cups water 2 tbsp ghee 8-10 cashews 8-10 raisins 1/4 tsp cardamom powder

Step 1

Dry roast the moong dal in a pan until golden and aromatic.

Step 2

Rinse the roasted dal and pressure cook with 2 cups of water until soft.

Step 3

Mash the cooked dal slightly. Add jaggery and mix well until it dissolves.

Simmer on low flame, stirring occasionally. Add coconut milk and mix gently. Do not boil after adding coconut milk.

In a small pan, heat ghee, fry cashews and raisins until golden, and add to the payasam.

Sprinkle cardamom powder, mix well, and serve warm or chilled.
